Camfed's Impact in 2007
Camfed's work was first established in Zambia in 2001 and has grown to cover 186 communities in 14 rural districts.
Partnerships with 224 schools are enabling Camfed to provide educational and social support to 52,800 children.
Partnerships with 186 primary schools and 38 secondary schools enable Camfed to help children make the transition from primary to secondary school education. Given that the Zambia school system requires every primary school child to pass exams to gain access to secondary school, Camfed provides extra curricular opportunities for rural children from poor families. This intervention is proving effective raising examination pass rates. A network of 191 Camfed-trained teacher mentors works in the partner school system.
Girls from very poor backgrounds are provided with full bursaries that include a guarantee of secondary education for the 4 year duration. Support includes, where necessary, accommodation at boarding school or safe lodging when a school is too far to walk daily, school fees, uniform and shoes, stationery and examination fees. A total of 3,666 are currently receiving full bursaries.
Cama membership has reached 644. A total of 157 have been trained as health outreach workers and have provided vital health information to 23,550 children and young people through the school system, churches and youth clubs.
18 Cama members have become business trainers and have trained a further 380 school leavers, of whom 236 have received business startup grants and 18 have transitioned to loans.
Cama philanthropy is multiplying the investment in girls' education. In 2007, the 644 members have so far supported the education of 2,576 children.
