A True Story
Written by Jordan Roberts (March of the Penguins), narrated by Academy Award®-winner Morgan Freeman and produced by Camfed, Where the Water Meets the Sky chronicles the true story of 23 women in a remote region of northern Zambia who learn to make a film. But this story is about far more than movie-making.
The group chooses to tell the story of Penelope, an 18-year-old orphan, who was forced to drop out of school and provide for herself and her siblings after her parents’ death. What begins as a film-making workshop becomes a journey of empowerment for all the participants. By learning to use a camera and shape Penelope’s story into a movie, they find the courage to raise an issue traditionally not discussed: the plight of girls orphaned by AIDS.
Camfed provided support for Penelope to go back to school. In September, 2009, she won the Goldman Sachs-Fortune Global Women Leaders Award, which honors women who are making significant impacts in their communities. Penelope’s determination to succeed makes her an inspiring role model for people around the world.

At the start of this film, I hesitatingly checked my male ego at the door and eventually found myself wiping from my eyes tears of pure joy and hope.—Ben Cannon, Planet Jackson Hole
