In Zimbabwe, hundreds of thousands of children will not be celebrating Mother’s Day this year. Nearly one million children have lost one or both parents to AIDS. And 3,000 more people are dying from AIDS every week. Traditional safety nets are unravelling. Women financiers gathered last month to hear how Camfed is turning the tide of poverty in rural communities across sub-Saharan Africa by educating girls. The Competitor Diversity Forum (CDF) was set up by female managing directors from the world’s leading investment banks to promote women in the financial services industry. At their annual charity dinner in London, these high-flying women heard from Camfed’s Executive Director Ann Cotton and Camfed patron Allison Pearson – prize-winning journalist and author of I Don’t Know How She Does It. Time is running out in the countdown to Christmas. And time is running out too for girls like 15-year-old Siamini, who would not be able to go to school in the New Year without your help. Siamini was sent from her rural village in Tanzania to work as a domestic servant in the urban centre of Iringa as soon as she finished primary school. But with Camfed’s support, she is about to begin her second year of secondary school in January. (more…)

Camfed’s work with young women received a significant boost this summer when the Big Lottery Fund awarded a generous grant of £355,829 to support Camfed’s expanding programme in Tanzania. With these new funds, Camfed will be able to help 16,500 girls in the impoverished Iringa Region of Tanzania to complete primary school and go on to secondary school. (more…)
