The Campaign for Female Education (Camfed)

Camfed is dedicated to fighting poverty and HIV/AIDS in rural Africa by educating girls and investing in their economic independence and leadership once they complete school. Since 1993, Camfed has been working in partnership with rural communities in Africa to set in motion a virtuous cycle of change.

Where the Water Meets the Sky

Camfed is committed to providing girls and women with the tools to tell their own stories, in their own voices. In our first documentary film, premiering at the Atlanta Film Festival in April, Oscar-winning actor Morgan Freeman narrates the story of a remarkable group of women in Northern Zambia as they learn the art of filmmaking and find the courage to change their lives.

When you educate a girl, everything changes

Fiona Muchembere of Zimbabwe is a testimony to the way that education can transform the life of a girl, her family and her community. Through her parents’ sacrifices, and with support from Camfed, Fiona became the first lawyer in her rural community. Today, Fiona is supporting 22 children in her community through school and speaking at prestigious international conferences such as the 2008 Skoll World Forum on Social Entrepreneurship.

Investing in education: the multiplier effect

Camfed’s work provides direct evidence for the growing consensus among global leaders that girls’ education is the single best investment that can be made in developing countries. In 2007, more than 408,000 children across four countries benefited from Camfed’s education programs. And the young women who have been supported through school by Camfed go on to reinvest the benefits of their education in their communities.
